So, since the news about Calvin abusing Adderall just came out, I thought I’d do an informational/opinionated post about it.

For those who don’t know what Adderall is, or don’t have much prior knowledge on it, Adderall is a pill-form drug, prescribed to people w/ ADD and/or ADHD. It’s very similar to Ritalin, and when given to the patients it was designed for, it helps w/ concentration, focus, and helps people stay on task when working, going to school, etc.

My brother has ADHD, and he takes Ritalin (very similar to Adderall, but much less addictive) - I asked him to describe how he feels on Ritalin vs. off. He told me that off Ritalin, he feels very free, but in a sort of unstable way, he has difficulty focusing, and a bigger appetite. On Ritalin, he feels stable, progressive, can stay focused for hours, but has difficulty eating and nothing tastes very appealing to him.

Now apply that to someone w/o ADHD. On a drug like Adderall or Ritalin, there is less to suppress, so it hits a lot harder. With my brother, for example, it simply keeps him on task. But w/ someone who does not struggle w/ ADHD, the effects are a lot stronger. A neurotypical brain on Adderall works a lot faster; they act on edge, and get so focused it can cause paranoia or angry outbursts. Adderall and Ritalin are not meant to be used on people w/o ADHD or ADD.

Let’s look at Leafy/Calvin for example - he is not neurotypical. He mentioned taking prescribed (Ritalin, I believe?) as a child to help him focus and suffering from depression in his teen years. Now, a lot of us suspect he still suffers from depression, but I’m not sure if he still struggles w/ focus or not. If he does, a small dose of Adderall probably isn’t that harmful. However, if he is truly abusing it, that would explain a lot of his behaviour:

  • aggression & an easy temper - compare an older video of Leafy’s vs. his new material, and try convincing me there isn’t a significant mood change.
  • erratic sleep-pattern - Calvin himself will admit, his sleep pattern doesn’t have any rhyme or rhythm.
  • loss of appetite & weight loss - my brother went into a lot of detail about this part: on Ritalin, he has difficulty eating, bc just like Adderall, it causes a loss of appetite (some people even go to the doctors and fake ADHD or ADD to get it prescribed for weight loss). He explained that somedays he can barely tough his lunch or dinner, and when it starts wearing off later at night, he gets very hungry. Bc of this, he doesn’t gain weight, and is very slim. I think it’s pretty noticeable that Calvin has lost a significant amount of weight.

Now, the real question is, if Calvin isn’t using Adderall bc he has ADHD or ADD, why would he be taking it? It’s simple: Adderall and Ritalin help you focus. They get work done. He’s one of the fastest growing YouTubers, ever, and to stay on top, he tries to put out a new video everyday, probably afraid to lose relevancy. Drugs can help.

And one more thing - Adderall and Ritain are so addictive and dangerous (for people w/o ADHD or ADD), that it is extremely controlled. Adderall is even banned in Canada. My brother for example, can only get Ritalin in monthly doses, and to refill his prescription, he needs to personally visit a doctor, and skip the pharmacist. If Leafy really is abusing Adderall, he needs psychological help. It is a very dangerous drug.

I agree. I think it would be good for him to get therapy or at least some sort of help to get him mentally and physically better
